Hi Overall I think this was an excellent piece of research. The challenge is using it productively and maintaining the energy/enthusiasm for change. I myself will be giving every member of the Board a copy with a remit to come back with at least one idea/change for improving a key area. I will take responsibilty for the overall initiative and monitor going forward. As part of my remit as IPA FPG member I will be looking at the IPA Training program; refining and adding to the program in the Procurement & Negotiating areas. I also sit on the IPA Procurement Forum and hence will communicate to the FPG any initiatives that come out from those meetings. Lastly,I believe that the Magic & Logic research could also provide the forum for which to introduce formal regulation of the industry's intermediaries eg. cost consultants, auditors etc. Something to think about! Regards Monica

James Power, HBOS Procurement says

I think the 1st big step was taken in getting the three industry bodies working together - this makes a lot of sense and should be encouraged. As for next steps (and this isn't out of self interest!) I think Agencies need to embrace Procurement for themselves. If agencies have their own Procurement people, they would become more efficient and structured without harming their creativity. Plus, it would make relationships with their clients' Procurement/Finance departments much less painful & more productive!

Very interesting. In many ways the process is at least as valuable as the outputs. The really big breakthrough for me was that these three parties were meeting together to discuss the issues. It gave the findings authority, and much more than just commonsense. It raised lots of questions. I would have liked more detail on how agencies can and should make money as well as on alternatives to pitching - what other models work well? I think an interesting dynamic to explore more would be the internal relationship between procurement, marketing and finance. I sense that procurement is very much the inquisitor, the mentor and disciplinarian. Even taking responsibility for quality control on occasions.

Magic and Logic is a great reason to improve the conversations we have with each other across marketing and procurement and with our marketing services suppliers. If we agree that this looks like best practice then we should find ways of recognising it when we have seen it.

Superbly interesting stuff. Even though the agencies here up North are smaller in size the issues you bring up in the report are just as valid. I'm confident this will be a great tool for us to improve our own business practice. I'd love to dig deeper into the matter of owning your IP and licensing it to clients as an alternative to time based fees. Any more info on best practice here? www.akestamholst.se

This is great - I have already forwarded the website to a number of procurement managers we work with!

A great initiative. A useful working guide to see if you are in a best practice company. And if you're not, then strive towards becoming one. Well done to all those who brought this to life.

Magic and Logic so accurately shows how all three parties can work together, for the long term benefit for all. I hope that all new starters in this area are given the book on their first day in the job. It will serve the industry well.

This book is an outstanding initiative that gives real insight into how sustainable best practice can benefit agencies and advertisers alike. At last the industry has published a well-articulated argument into how smart 'ways of working' can and do help liberate creativity and effectiveness. The impact of this report will be significant and long lasting. Well done. Jim Hubbard, White Door Consulting.
